Feast of the Immaculate Conception

November 24th, 2011

FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION – DECEMBER, 8th

Novena to the Immaculate Conception begins on Fri. 25th November and ends on December 7th.

Following is a Novena Prayer  to the Immaculata:

I greet you, ever-blessed Virgin, Mother of God, throne of grace, miracle of almighty power! I greet you sanctuary

of the most Holy Trinity and Queen of the Universe, Mother of mercy and refuge of sinners!  Most loving Mother, attracted by your beauty and sweetness, and by your tender compassion, I confidently turn to you, and beg of you to obtain for me of your dear Son the favour I request in this novena (here mention your request).

Obtain for me also, Queen of Heaven, the most lively contrition for my many sins and the grace to imitate closely those virtues which you practiced so faithfully, especially humility, purity, and obedience.  Above all, I beg you to be my mother and protectress, to receive me into the number of your devoted children and to guide me from your high throne of glory.  Do not reject my petitions, Mother of mercy!  Have pity on me, and do not abandon me during life or at the moment of my death..

Daughter of the Eternal Father, Mother of the Eternal Son, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, temple of the adorable Trinity, pray for me.  Immaculate and tender Heart of Mary, refuge of the needy and hope of sinners, filled with the most lively respect, love and gratitude, I devote myself forever to your service, and I offer you my heart with all that I am and all that belongs to me.  Accept this offering, sweet Queen of Heaven and earth, and obtain for me of your dear Son, Jesus Christ, the favours I ask through your intercession in this novena.  Obtain for me also a tender, generous, constant
love of God, perfect submission to his adorable will, the true spirit of a

Christian, and the grace of final perseverance.

Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER OF IDENTIFICATION WITH THE IMMACULATA

O Immaculate Conception, Mary, my Mother, live in me, act in me, speak in and through me.  Think your thoughts in my mind, love through my heart.  Give me your own dispositions and feelings.  Teach, lead and guide me to Jesus, Correct, enlighten and expand my entire personality and life.  Replace me with yourself.  Incline me to constant adoration and thanksgiving, pray in and through me.  Let me live in you and keep me in this union always.

Amen.

Third Annual MI Conference

The third annual Militia of the Immaculata (MI) conference took place on Saturday, June 12th at the St. Augustine’s Seminary in Toronto, and despite the rain, the conference was well attended.

The speakers were, Fr. Stephen McKinley, O.F.M. Conv., Rector of the Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe, Illinois, U.S.A, and Fr. Patrick Greenough, O.F.M., Conv., National President of the MI, U.S.A. and Canada.

The Conference started at 9:00 am., with the welcome speech by Jaclyn Marroquin of MI Teens, Canada.

The opening prayer was the Memorare, led by Fr. Stephen McKinley.  The Theme of this Year’s conference was “The Year for Priests”.

The first speaker was Fr. Stephen whose talk was based on the post-synod Apostolic exhortation of Pope John Paul II,  “Christifedelis Laici”.  This document focused on the vocation and mission of the Laity in the Church and in the world.

Fr. Stephen reminded us that our priesthood began with our Baptism, and quoted from the scriptures to confirm this (Ex. 19.6. Heb. 7:21.,  Rev. 1:6. Rev. 5:10). While our Priests form the Ministerial priesthood and perform the Sacramental duties, we, the laity are the priesthood of the faithful and by our Baptism we received God’s grace – gratis – totally free, for everything we need to obtain eternal life. With this grace we should bear fruit and spread the message of the Kingdom of Jesus to the whole world.  Our goal should be “Everything for God”.  He also stated that something that we should all strive to achieve is the Greatest Commandment, which is to “Love one another. Fr. Stephen ended his talk by encouraging us to read the document which can be found on the Vatican website. (Try www.catholicculture.org)

Celebrant at the Mass was Fr. Patrick with Fr. Henry McErlean who, as concelebrant, read the Gospel and homily.  Fr. Stephen provided the Music.  After the homily eleven persons made a Total Consecration to the Blessed Mother.  Before the Consecration Ceremony, Fr. Patrick spoke to those to be consecrated saying that they should be certain of their decision to be consecrated, because once they have given their “yes”, the Blessed Mother will lead them into places where they may
least expect.

Fr. Patrick our second speaker in the afternoon spoke on the role of the Priests, the various duties for which they are responsible and their day-to-day activities.  He spoke about the special relationship between the Priest and God and compared this relationship to the special relationship between a mother and her child.  He said that in this special relationship the Priest is able to ask God to come down to earth during the consecration at Holy Mass.

He also spoke of our relationship with our Blessed Mother and said that as a mother always knows what is best for her children and is always there for her children, in the same way Our Blessed Mother Mary is always there for us.  When we consecrate ourselves to her, we should dedicate all our prayers actions and sacrifices to her, reciting the consecration prayer daily.

Information on MI teens and the upcoming Summer Retreat camp (August, 4-8, 2010) was provided by Jaclyn Marroquin and David Mesina.

Closing remarks and thanks was made by Catharine Bone

Feast of St Maximilian Kolbe

August 9th, 2010

Feast of St Maximilian Kolbe
14 August 2010

On the eve of the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, we have the feast of our founder who served Our Lady devoutly and with ardour his whole life.  We find in his writings and his life, a testimony to that devotion.

St Maximilian was so consumed by his passion to lead all people to the Sacred Heart through the Immaculate, that he was in fact granted this at the end of his life.  He was so consumed by this love that in fact, we have no relicts of this great saint.  His body was destroyed in the ovens of Auschwitz-Birkenau.  It is a testimony to his love for the Immaculate and the Sacred Heart that even his body was destroyed and nothing was to remain of him in the world.  He said, “Make yourself disappear”, and so to we can and should so that all that remains is the love of God shining through us and in us.

His life has been a great influenced on those of his day, his Order, and ordinary Catholics today, realize that the life to come, eternal life is so very important.  Our life here is but a preparation for that life in eternity and so should be spent, should be consumed as his was, with evangelizing those around us: “to gain the whole world for her, so that the reign of sin will cease” (St Maximilian Kolbe).

We need to be like St Maximilian and spend our days on this earth reaching out to the fallen world around us in all the apostolates possible to increase the Kingdom of God.  It is all the more urgent to prepare others through their consecration to Our Lady.  If we offer every day to her, every action and suffering through her hands, we can increase the kingdom and save souls; “to lead all men and every individual through Mary to the most Sacred Heart of Jesus” (St Maxmilian Kolbe:Motto of the MI).

We should use the feast day of our founder as an opportunity to bring ever more people into the fold and pray at this Mass for conversions, including our own.  The sacrifice of the Mass is central to our prayer as Catholics, and was indeed the foundation of the life of St Maximilian Kolbe.

We must become more and more the instruments needed by Our Lady “without any limits” (St Maximilian Kolbe) and in this way become part of the work of the salvation of the world.  Our prayer on this feast day should be as our daily prayer states: to renew our consecration to Our Lady and to be of use to the coming of the Kingdom; and to pray for the conversion of the world and especially the enemies of the Church.

The proposed 2011 MI annual conference is set for Saturday June 18, 2011

MI International Council

January 28th, 2011

MI International Council  Jan.  19 -21, 2011, Bologna, Italy

The council was held at the Mother House of the Fr. Kolbe Missionaries in Bologna, Italy.  Each council member gave a brief review of the ministry they were involved in for the MI.   Some of the more important topics that were discussed was the relationship of the Conventual Franciscan Order with the MI which was founded by St. Maximilian Kolbe, a Conventual Franciscan and the MI which is now a Public Association of the Faithful.  Like all relationships, this one too is a growing and evolving one.  There were three main issues that dominated the three day meeting, 1.)  The structure of the MI,   2.) Formation in the MI,   3.) Finances.

A discussion of the Structure ensued about the role of an MI center, what is a center and should there be continental, national, regional and local centers and what is a City of the Immaculate? The role of the national center and how national centers are determined was discussed.  It was acknowledged that for smaller countries, requiring 5 local centers in order to have a national center is not realistic.  As the current Statutes of the MI are being reviewed this will be taken into consideration.  For now, continental centers were not accepted as it is already difficult and time consuming to care for a country let alone a continent.

Formation was then discussed.  That there was a lack of unity of the MI and formation throughout the world was a concern.  A basic manual was thought to be needed that would give a common identity and understanding of the MI.  All preparation for Consecration should off a Life of St. Maximilian, a history of the MI, theology of Consecration and an explanation of the consecration prayer.  It was noted that one can be consecrated immediately but that one should not be enrolled in the MI without a basic consecration class as stated above.

Finances for the International Center have always been a concern as there is no regular income and the center is totally dependent upon the generosity of national centers and individual MI members.  It is hoped that this can be alleviated by making the needs of the International Center known to the wider membership.

Lastly the worldwide MI was divided into regions among the members of the MI International Council to better assist in communication and meeting the needs of the local MI.

Bro. Louis Schmid OFM Conv. is responsible for Australia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam and New Zealand.

Fr. Patrick Greenough OFM Conv is responsible for USA/Canada, Great Britain/Ireland, English speaking Africa, Southeast Asia and Nepal.

THE ANGELUS

March 15th, 2011

THE ANGELUS

Excerpt from a letter regarding the Angelus, written to the Editor of the Catholic Digest – December 2004, by Erika Papp Faber:

"The reason we say it (the Angelus) at noon goes back more than 500 years.  After the fall of Constantinople, the Turks began their advance up the Balkans, threatening to overrun Christian Europe.  Pope Callistus III called for a crusade to stem the Moslem tide.  Franciscan preacher John Capistrano went all across Europe preaching the crusade. On June 29, 1456, the pope called for the ringing of the church bells at noon and the recitation of the Our Father and the Angelus as a form of spiritual crusade. The Turks arrived at Nándorfehérvár (present-day Belgrade) a month sooner than they were expected.  Only 18,000 ill-equipped peasants, priests, and students were ready to face the well-armed forces of Sultan Mohammed II.
Capistrano and Hungarian military leader János Humyadi led the defense.  On July 22, the Turks broke through the walls of the city, and all seemed lost.  But the Hungarians set fire to brushwork saturated with powder, pitch, and sulfur, and hurled it down on the onrushing Turks, who fled, leaving behind 40,000 dead defeated by a handful of the desperate men backed by the prayers of all Christendom.

Pope Callistus ascribed victory at Nándorfehérvár a mere three weeks after his call to recite the Angelus, the prayer recited at the ringing of the noon bells."

THE ANGELUS
(usually said at 6:00 AM; 12 noon and 6:00 PM.):

The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
And she conceived by the Holy Ghost.
Hail Mary……..

Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it done unto me according to Thy word.
Hail Mary…….

And the Word was made Flesh.
And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary……

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts;
that we, to whom the incarnation of Christ, Thy Son
was made known by the message of an angel,
may by His Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of His
Resurrection,
through the same Christ Our Lord

4th Annual Conference of the Militia of the Immaculata

June 18, 2011

The 4th Annual Militia of the Immaculata (MI) Conference which took place on June 18th at the St. Augustine Seminary was again a success this year.

A change in the day’s agenda had Fr. Stephen McKinley, Rector of the Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe, speaking for the entire day.  Fr. Stephen led us in a very exciting, interesting and educational trip through the history of the Mass and the proposed changes that will take place in the Mass beginning in Advent of this year.  He has promised to return next year, and if possible, continue his session on the Liturgy.  This information was received with great enthusiasm by the attendees.

After the Homily of the Mass which was given by Msgr. Nusca, Rector of the Seminary, 8 persons made a total consecration to the Immaculata.  The consecration ceremony was performed by Fr. Patrick Greenough, International President of North America, who spoke to those being consecrated, reminding them of the true meaning of being consecrated to the Blessed Mother.

Conference ended at 3p.m., with most of the attendees being sorry to see it end, but state that they were looking forward to next year’s conference."

This year’s Conference was recorded and for those who would like to have a recording as a memento and a reminder of Fr. Stephen’s talk, a CD may be obtained by contacting Vince Kirton: (416) 492-9593  or by email: vkirton@sympatico.ca
